Vinyl Roof Prevents Destruction of Ontario Businesses

NORTH BAY, Ontario, Jan. 30, 2009 – A flame resistant vinyl roof prevented fire from destroying several businesses housed in a North Bay building.

John Lechlitner, the owner of the building said after the fire, "Thankfully we went with that type of roof because it contained the fire.  We knew from the fire department that there were several hydrants that didn't work," a situation that prompted deliberations among the fire department, the city, and the insurance company, as well as investigating the fire's cause.

The fire originated in the Motion Canada building on a Sunday evening, and there was mostly smoke damage until the fire broke through the ceiling.

A few adjoining businesses, such as the Gymtrix gymnastics facility and Canadian Lifting and Supplies, sustained smoke and water damage.

Motion Canada, which supplies hydraulics to the mining and forestry industry in Northern Ontario and Quebec, was back in operation in less than 24 hours with the help of generators.

In addition to the PVC roof, a fire partition wall separating the shop from the office spared further damage to the business.   Frank Valenti, co-owner of Designed Roofing, said a Sarnafil PVC roof like the one on this building reduces the amount of flame spread and can reduce the amount of damage sustained from a fire.  "This type of roofing reflects the heat and keeps the building cool, and it's long lasting."
