Vinyl 'Justifiably Trusted'

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 23, 2006 (VNS) – Vinyl Institute President Tim Burns, in a letter to the Wall Street Journal, emphasized that vinyl is “justifiably trusted and widely used” in health care, where it is the leading material in numerous “critical-care medical devices regulated for safety by the Food and Drug Administration.”

Burns critiqued the paper’s October 4 story on “green” hospitals, noting that it appeared to be based almost entirely on sources in the activist community.

“Although critics are glib about substituting more ‘sustainable’ or ‘environment friendly’ materials, whether in hospitals, offices or homes, the reality is that few of these materials have anywhere near the life-cycle data backing up their claims that vinyl has,” Burns wrote.

People should demand more evidence, he said, before thinking of replacing vinyl – “a material known for its affordability, cleanliness, durability, flexibility, energy saving and other practical as well as environmental attributes.”
